HISTORY
Since 1972
The Lido Azzurro swimming centre was inaugurated in 1972. It was the result of an ambitious project by a group of local entrepreneurs who decided to invest in a state-of-the-art swimming and bathing facility. Even today, the Lido Azzurro swimming pool is the only one with an indoor Olympic pool in the province of Milan and Monza Brianza. In 1972, it was the third swimming pool with a fifty-metre indoor pool in the whole of Italy (after Rome and Naples).
The complex stands on land owned by the noble Bagatti family, a stone's throw from the historic Villa Bagatti in Varedo. Behind the swimming centre passes, clearly visible, the ancient tree-lined avenue that runs from Paderno Dugnano to Varedo, at the gates of the aforementioned Villa. Today, the entire area on which the facility, the Villa and the Viale Bagatti insist has been annexed to the Grugnotorto Park, which is, together with the municipality, redeveloping and enhancing the area.
In 1970, the private company Milano 2000 s.p.a. was founded with the corporate purpose of building and managing sports facilities. Among the various partners were the Bagatti brothers themselves, who sold the land to the company, the Nardi brothers, the Moro brothers and, among others, Giuseppe Longhi known as "Peppo Sub", who was to play a fundamental role in the company. Two years after the company was founded, the Lido Azzurro swimming pool was opened to the public. The facility immediately became a reference point for swimming and diving activities throughout Lombardy, and from the very beginning it enjoyed considerable success. In sporting terms, from 1974 onwards, it is an escalation of successes and records that reach the present day. From the underwater records of Peppo himself, Bergamini's and Donaggio's crossings, to the excellent results in swimming and finswimming of Galantucci, Asnaghi, Mazzei, Di Ceglie, and Manca, we arrive at today's medals and world records of Stefano Figini and Olympian Beatrice Adelizzi. These are important results that have brought the name of the Lido Azzurro swimming centre to many local and national newspapers, as well as to newspapers and television stations all over the world, not least the Record Show last May.
In 1987 the company Milano 2000 s.p.a. was transformed into Milano 2000 s.r.l. and in 1990 the plant was restructured. The company is still run by Giuseppe Longhi. In 2009, the shareholders decided to sell the company. On 1 April 2010, a group of friends who are passionate and fond of the pool become the new shareholders of Milano 2000 s.r.l.
On 31 December 2010, the company changed its name and became the current Lido Azzurro Varedo s.r.l.. The rest is today's history.
