There’s the gym membership that’s been used three times (perhaps a gift from the children – which is the most affectionate way there is to say, "Mum, get moving"). There’s the exercise bike in the cellar, which now serves as a coat rack. There’s the walk with my friend, which began in September and ended in the darkness of November. And there’s the doctor who, at every check-up, repeats, "You must get some exercise, madam", as if I didn’t already know that.
Every attempt that went wrong led to the same conclusion: "That’s just the way I am – I’m not very consistent".
And that’s where they told you the wrong story.
Because, on closer inspection, those attempts did not fail due to a lack of character. They all failed at exactly the same point, for exactly the same reason. A reason that has nothing to do with your willpower. And one that nobody, over the years of gym memberships and New Year’s resolutions, has ever pointed out to you.
After the age of 40–45, the drop in oestrogen makes the joints more prone to inflammation: 50% of women going through the menopause experience joint pain. Every run, every jump, every "floor-based" class puts strain on your knees and back, which are already causing you trouble. The result: If you train today, you’ll feel worse for two days, and the brain learns the equation ‘movement equals punishment’.
The weight room and floor exercise classes are full of mirrors, and mirrors are made for comparison. And Half the hard work is done before you even go in: in deciding to show your face.
Exercise bikes in the cellar, apps, solo walks: all activities that They depend entirely on how you feel that day. And after a day of work and family life, that’s the first thing to run out.
Three costs. Anyone would stop paying them, and in fact you have stopped. The problem is that The bill for the layover goes up anyway: for every year you take off, your muscle mass decreases, and with it what you call your "metabolism"; your joints stiffen; and your swimsuit stays in the drawer for yet another summer.
It’s no longer needed character.
We need a place where those three costs don’t exist.
When you’re submerged up to your chest, your body exerts a force on your joints equivalent to about one-tenth of your body weight. That’s why water aerobics is the form of exercise that Orthopaedic surgeons and physiatrists are the first to prescribe For those with aching backs and knees: in rehabilitation, they call it hydrokinesitherapy, and they charge per session.
But the water doesn’t just take the strain off: it adds resistance. It slows down every movement, in every direction, throughout the whole class: your muscles really have to work hard (burning between 300 and 500 calories per class) whilst the joints are resting. And you can feel the water’s continuous massage on your circulation that very evening, in your legs.
Translation: it is the training session in which you’ll be in trouble if you don’t pay the bill the next day.
The aqua fitness programme at the Lido Azzurro in Varedo is designed to tackle, one by one, the three reasons why you’ve always given up:
All the work takes place in the water, where you weigh 10%. You stand where your feet touch the bottom, and Being able to swim is of no use: If you can get into a bath, you can do aqua aerobics.
Your body works underwater. No mirrors, no onlookers: if you’re going at half-speed, nobody will notice, and everyone adjusts the intensity to suit their own day, all within the same class. It’s the only workout where the shame stays in the changing rooms.
An activity of your choice, a fixed time, an instructor, a group. On Tuesdays (or whichever day you choose), it stops being just a good intention and becomes a regular fixture: When you jump, someone notices. It may seem like a minor detail, but it’s the reason why you’ll still be there in March.
Lighter legs right from the very first lesson You’ve already read about them above: they’re the result of the water’s massaging effect on your circulation. You can see for yourself during the trial, before you make any decisions.
Let’s be completely honest about one thing: We don’t promise you’ll lose kilos or centimetres.
You could. You’ve done it before. And that’s where they fall apart, every time:
Pay all three charges together: strain on the joints, mirrors, and sheer determination as the sole driving force. For anyone aged 45 and over, it’s the most expensive environment there is, and in fact, those monthly memberships end up making you feel guilty at 30 euros a month.
It’s healthy and free, and it’s perfectly fine to keep doing it. But it doesn’t build core and arm strength, it doesn’t get your sweat flowing, and above all doesn't have an appointment: Give it a miss when it’s raining. It always rains in November.
It takes away the judgement but leaves you on your own: with no group and no timetable lasts as long as the enthusiasm – that is, three weeks.
If you’ve had it done, you know it works: and that’s the point. At 40–60 euros a session, it gets you back on your feet in the short term, then the course ends and you’re back to square one. The maintenance programme that the physiotherapist recommends at the end of the course is exactly this: The same water, the same principle, but at the standard rate rather than the treatment rate.
The season runs from 14 September 2026 to 4 June 2027, and The price of the trial session is the same whichever activity you choose.
Stated here, before the form, because that is how we would like to be treated too: Find out the price, have a go at a proper lesson with the real group, and only then make your decision.
Payment is due at the time of booking, so the spot in the pool is yours.
A word of advice from someone who sees new classes start every September: Come along with a friend. Not because of the discount (there’s no need for one at 15.90), but because the couples who turned up together for the first lesson in June are still there.
"The staff at the swimming pool are very friendly and helpful. [...] There are plenty of courses on offer."
"A lively place with plenty to do. The staff are always on hand at reception and throughout the premises. It’s a very spacious and clean swimming pool!"
La prova si prenota finché nel gruppo c'è posto, costa 15,90 euro e it doesn’t commit you to anything. You’re already familiar with the "try, give up, feel guilty" pattern: this is your chance to find out how the other one ends.
